Most registered nurses (RNs) would agree that there's rarely enough time in a shift to get everything done. Indeed, RNs' jobs are fast-paced and demanding. Whether you aspire to be an RN or have already embarked on your career, developing time management skills is essential. By making the most effective use of your time during your busy shifts, you can be the best nurse you can be.
Table of Contents[hide]
1. Plan Ahead
Although RNs' shifts tend to be unpredictable, there are certain tasks that must be completed every day. Before heading into work, take some time to make a list of these essential tasks. Estimate how long each task will take and prioritize them from most to least important. Post the list in a prominent place and work through it, one task at a time.
2. Stay Organized
Disorganization can waste a lot of time. The to-do list outlined above is a step in the right direction, but keeping your work area tidy also helps. Keep your paperwork in order and don't let it pile up. Knowing where to find everything you need quickly will help you get through your day more efficiently.
3. Complete the Most Difficult Tasks First
While it may be tempting to start with the easy tasks, completing the more difficult tasks first can be more efficient. For example, start your rounds by visiting the most critical patient or tackle the most time-consuming task first. Once you have the harder stuff out of the way, your day will flow more smoothly.
4. Avoid Getting Sidetracked
Everyone needs breaks from time to time, but non-work-related distractions can seriously impact your productivity. Set aside specific times for breaks, chatting with coworkers, and other personal matters. Otherwise, stay focused on the task at hand. Remember that anything that isn't completed today will only become more difficult to complete tomorrow.
5. Communicate Effectively
Poor communication can lead to mistakes and misunderstandings that can disrupt your workflow. Communicate effectively and often with your coworkers and patients. This will help everyone stay on the same page and avoid unnecessary delays.
6. Have Healthy Snacks on Hand
Hunger can make it difficult to concentrate and be productive. Keep healthy snacks on hand to help you get through your shift. Protein shakes and bars, fresh fruit, string cheese, and nuts are all good options.
7. Delegate Effectively
The most successful RNs know when to ask for help and when to say no. Don't be afraid to delegate tasks to others when you have the bandwidth to do so. This will free up your time so that you can focus on the most important things. When everyone works together as a team, more gets accomplished.
Time management is one of the most important skills for RNs to develop. By following the tips above, you can become more efficient and effective in your job.
